The Nabi – Not your Daddy’s Tablet

I guess everybody expects that I’m a gadget geek. It would come as no surprise that I have a multitude of electronic devices in every corner of my home. I have smart-phones and laptops, desktops, movie players, movie streamers, recorders, set top boxes, iPods, iPads, Android stuff galore… and an 8 year old child that we affectionately call “the crusher” So it is certainly my pleasure to introduce you to “the Nabi” . Finally, a 200 dollar kid-friendly android tablet that has a responsive touchscreen, large size app buttons, access to a huge variety of kid appropriate content like music, books, games and movies. The Nabi also has some pretty nifty  parental controls built right in. So, if you have nightmares every time your little darling puts his mitts on your 600 dollar iPad, the Nabi might be able to calm your fears and delight your child, all at the same time. (How often does that happen?) Nabi has a high-resolution Multi-Touch display that a...

    Lenovo Yoga Ultrabook and Tablet

While at CES, I got a chance to check out one of Lenovo’s newest products, the Yoga. I can only assume that it was given this name because of all the positions it can bend in. The Yoga has a unique swivel hinge that can allow the keyboard to swing all the way around. It can also form a “tent mode” which will flip over the screen, which will be excellent for presentations. And you thought the ASUS Aspire S5 was the coolest ultrabook that was revealed at CES this year! As you might be able to tell from the photo, the Yoga will be running Windows 8. The company did not know how much that will affect the Yoga, but they are preparing for it. Since it has a touchscreen, the user can access the Yoga like a tablet, and the keyboard will be disabled while in this position. By the way, the touchscreen has 10 point multitouch capacity. The rest of the specs look very interesting. The screen is 13.3 inches with a resolution of 1600 x 900. When folded, it is at 0.67 inc...

Triangle Tablet, as satirized on “The Office”, could actually be a reality

Some of you might remember when we covered how the popular television show The Office (American version) satirized PC tablet culture as Dwight Schrute introduced a triangular tablet. Apparently, someone wants to harness “The Power of the Pyramid” as they are trying to develop an actual triangle tablet. The man is Eric Calisto, and apparently he was inspired by the aforementioned episode of The Office. You can read about his progress at Kickstarter, and he wants about $ 25,000 of funding. At this writing, only four people have pledged about $ 28. I noticed the picture on Kickstarter isn’t really of a triangular tablet, but only a triangle. Considering that Kickstarter is made for concept technology looking for funding, I’m surprised that there isn’t a better mock-up as proof of concept. Perhaps this guy needs to borrow some props from NBC. If you want to try can get on board with this possible new tablet fad, head over to Kickstarter and pledge ...

CooTek TouchPal Tablet Keyboard app announced

CooTek has just announced their TouchPal Tablet Keyboard app which will play nice with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, and what makes this special is it is the only Android tablet keyboard app which will rely on gestures in order to split and resize the keyboard. Not only that, you will be able to enjoy swiping and typing input methods. With the plethora of Android-powered tablets having rolled out recently, as more and more people take on these devices, it goes without saying that some of them would have concerns about the overall typing experience. Well, CooTek’s TouchPal makes sense of it all, where it will address the concerns by offering a powerful soft keyboard that was specially designed for tablets. If you happen to have unwrapped an Android-powered tablet (from any manufacturer) under the Christmas tree this year, then you might want to make a beeline and download this free app so that your tablet typing experience is a snap. For those who are intere...

LightPad turns the smartphone into a tablet

What you are seeing here is the LightPad from QP Optoelectronics, and it is designed to turn the smartphone into something more tablet-sized. Why would anyone want this? Have you ever done something on your smartphone that is so much easier to do on a laptop or tablet? I don’t even like sending text messages because I can’t stand touchscreen keyboards. Fortunately, the LightPad has a keyboard attachment. There is a video after the jump if you want to see how it works, and the display that you see here is a projector with a 854 x 480 resolution for an 11-inch screen. Future models of this will have the same size display but with 1280 x 720 resolution. I’m not certain if the present model will have this feature, but the projector can be turned around to create a 60 inch display on the wall. I am surprised that the LightPad is one of the first products of its type, as HDMI cable seems to be only good for playing videos and viewing photos from a smartphone. I...
